When you eat, your food is broken down into a type of sugar called glucose.
Glucose is used by the body to make the energy it needs to do work. To turn glucose into energy, however, the body needs insulin.
When you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin. Without enough insulin, the glucose from your food stays in your blood, where it causes damage to the body.
There is no cure for type 2 diabetes, but it can be managed. Improving your diet, exercising and taking medicine proscribed by your doctor can keep your blood glucose in a healthy range. Many people with diabetes are able to live long and healthy lives.
